Why Is My Ameren Illinois Bill So High in 2026?

Why is your Ameren Illinois bill so high? If it jumped in 2026, start by splitting the bill into its two major pieces: delivery and supply. Then check your supplier, your usage and your home's heating and cooling.

Ameren Illinois delivers electricity to your home. But the company says it doesn't profit from electricity supply charges. Those costs are passed straight through to customers. That matters, because a high bill can come from several different places:

What Is Ameren Illinois' Current Price to Compare?

The Price to Compare is Ameren's default price for supply and transmission. It's the number to measure any other supplier's offer against. Ameren Illinois' residential Price to Compare for October 1, 2026 through May 31, 2027 is:

Both include Ameren's supply charge, supply cost adjustment and 2.765¢/kWh transmission charge. This fall's price is lower than the summer 2026 price of 11.326¢. But it's still about 24% higher than a year ago.

Keep in mind that the Price to Compare covers supply and transmission only. Delivery charges, riders and taxes are separate.

Why Is Ameren Different From ComEd?

This is important. ComEd is part of PJM. Ameren Illinois is part of MISO. They're separate regional power markets with different capacity auctions, transmission systems and supply conditions.

So even though both utilities serve Illinois homeowners, you shouldn't assume a ComEd explanation also applies to Ameren.

What Is MISO?

MISO stands for the Midcontinent Independent System Operator. It runs the high-voltage power grid across much of the Midwest and parts of the South. Ameren Illinois relies on that regional market for supply, capacity and transmission. That means regional demand can affect Ameren customers even when the new load isn't on your street.

MISO's capacity prices have been a big factor. Capacity is a payment to keep enough power plants available for peak demand. It's built into your supply rate. In Ameren's region, the summer capacity price was about $30 per MW-day in 2024. In 2026, it was $424.30. By one estimate, capacity makes up roughly 20% of the supply price on average.

Are Data Centers Affecting Ameren Illinois?

They're becoming an important part of Ameren's demand outlook. Ameren has told investors it expects strong electric sales growth through the end of the decade. It says that growth is driven largely by manufacturing and data centers. Data center demand is also one reason MISO capacity prices have climbed.

But data centers aren't being added to your residential meter. They affect the broader regional market and infrastructure.

Does That Mean Data Centers Caused My Ameren Bill?

No. That would be too simple. Your personal bill can change because of supply procurement, MISO capacity and transmission costs, weather, delivery rates, your supplier and your own electricity use. Data center growth is an increasingly important planning factor, but it isn't the only explanation for an individual bill.

Step 1: Check Your Ameren Electricity Supplier

Illinois lets Ameren customers choose who supplies the electricity portion of their bill. You may be on:

As of May 2026, about 40% of Ameren residential customers were with an alternative supplier. Most of them were in municipal aggregation. One review of state data found Ameren customers on alternative suppliers paid about 3.05¢/kWh more on average than default supply over the year reviewed.

Before buying any equipment, find out what you're paying today.

Compare Against the Price to Compare

If your supplier charges materially more than Ameren's current Price to Compare, find out why. Maybe the plan offers a long-term fixed rate, renewable electricity or other protections. But don't assume competitive supply automatically means cheaper supply. And remember that Ameren's own price drops above 800 kWh. That can make a flat-rate offer look worse in high-usage months.

Step 2: Check Monthly Usage

Compare the same month year over year. If August 2025 was 850 kWh and August 2026 was 1,300 kWh, that's more than a 50% increase in usage. Even if rates were identical, the bill would rise dramatically.

Compare August kWh to August kWh, not just the August bill to the August bill.

Summer HVAC Can Drive Ameren Bills

Central and southern Illinois see high temperatures, humidity and long cooling seasons. Common summer drivers include central AC, heat pumps, dehumidifiers, pool equipment, poor insulation and leaky ducts. Summer also carries Ameren's highest delivery charge, so every extra summer kWh costs more to deliver.

If your kWh spikes when the weather gets hot, HVAC deserves attention.

Winter Can Be Just as Important

Ameren territory also has real heating demand. Electric use can rise in winter because of heat pumps, auxiliary heat, space heaters, electric water heating, poor insulation and air leakage. A four-season climate means efficiency matters almost all year.

Step 3: Evaluate HVAC Performance

Look for long run times, uneven temperatures, frequent repair calls, rising annual kWh, old equipment, high humidity and frequent auxiliary heat. A working system isn't necessarily an efficient system.

Step 4: Evaluate Insulation and Air Leakage

The house itself determines how much heating and cooling it needs. Common trouble spots include the attic, crawlspace, basement, rim joists, ductwork, windows and doors. Ameren Illinois offers instant discounts on insulation and air sealing for qualifying homes. That can make these fixes more affordable. Reducing the home's load saves money no matter what happens to future prices.

Step 5: Consider Power Smart Pricing

Ameren's Power Smart Pricing is a residential program where the supply price changes every hour based on the MISO market. Ameren posts the next day's prices each evening. It recommends staying on the program for at least a year to judge results across seasons.

It can work well for households that can shift EV charging, laundry, the dishwasher or battery charging. But it also exposes you to higher prices during expensive hours, so it has to fit how you actually live.

EV Owners May Have Another Opportunity

Ameren's ChargeSmart program rewards EV charging during its preferred overnight window of 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sometimes when you use power matters as much as how much.

Step 6: Reduce Household Demand

Suppose your home uses 14,000 kWh a year, and efficiency and HVAC improvements bring it down to 11,000 kWh. That's 3,000 fewer kWh you need to buy every year. Every future change in supply prices now affects a smaller load.

Step 7: Evaluate Solar

Illinois still has meaningful solar incentives. Ameren offers a $300/kW-DC rebate for qualifying solar with a smart inverter. Illinois Shines adds value through Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), which your system earns as it produces power. A solar model for an Ameren home should use:

Any 2026 calculation should also leave out the federal 30% residential solar credit, which isn't available for systems installed after December 31, 2025.

Step 8: Evaluate Battery Storage

A battery may help with storm outages, well pumps, sump pumps, refrigeration, medical equipment and solar self-consumption. A rural Ameren household may have very different backup needs than a suburban one. That should shape the design.

Should You Install Solar Because Your Ameren Bill Is High?

Maybe, but not before diagnosing the bill. Start with your supplier, the Price to Compare, monthly kWh, HVAC, insulation, solar economics and backup needs.

The cheapest fix may be switching supply. The biggest may be HVAC. The best long-term answer may include solar. The house decides.

The Ashborn Approach

Ashborn Partners helps Illinois homeowners look at their electricity supplier, usage, HVAC, solar, battery storage and whole-home efficiency through one personalized home-energy review.

Your bill is the symptom. Understand the market and the house before choosing the solution.

Ameren Illinois supply prices, transmission charges, alternative supplier offers and utility tariffs can change. Large-load growth is one factor in regional planning and should not be treated as the sole cause of an individual residential bill increase.
